Transformational Habits
Have you ever stopped to notice how many habits you use every day? The answer is likely to be, “Probably not”. The reason we don’t notice our habits is because we use very little conscious thought to participate in them. And that’s the very reason we have them. Let me explain!
Thinking is the hardest form of work we do. It takes a lot of energy to produce new thoughts. Have you ever had one of those days in which you have to stay focused thinking about something and then afterwards you feel exhausted? That’s because thinking is laborious work. The average person has 25,000 thoughts a day. Surprisingly they turn out to be the same 25,000 thoughts day after day after day!
Habits simplify our lives. They are conditioned patterns of behavior that become almost completely automatic for us so we don’t have to consciously think about everything we do. They create a short cut for us to get regular consistent things done without having to exert a lot of extra energy to do so.
Some of you may have heard me talk about the three types of habits before. This subject is so important it is worth reiterating. The three types of habits are: empowering, neutral and disempowering habits. Some examples of empowering habits are daily exercise, brushing your teeth and reading your goals and positive affirmations every day.
Disempowering habits are just that, they steal your power away that is necessary in creating the holistic success that you desire for your life. Some examples of disempowering habits are smoking cigarettes, excessive drinking and negative self talk.
Neutral habits are just like they sound. They are the habits that don’t hurt you or help you they are just simply habits. For instance, you may drive to work the same way every day. To do so doesn’t hurt you or help you, it’s just a habit.
And here’s a little fact the majority of people don’t know, success itself is a habit. That’s right, true holistic success is the by-product of taking consistent actions because it’s not what you do once in a while that makes you successful, it’s what you do consistently that does. Think about it, you can’t exercise only once and expect to stay in great shape for the rest of your life, right?
The word ‘Transformation’ means to go beyond what you have now. Therefore the key to improving your life and becoming more successful is easy. Transform some of your disempowering and neutral habits and into empowering habits. For example, if you drive the same way to work ever day, instead of listening to music, (or worse) the news on the radio, listen to audio programs that can feed your mind with the positive, constructive thoughts that will help you make advances in your life. You can listen to programs on growing your wealth, your vocabulary, improving your relationships, or your health and fitness.
Another great transformational habit is to write out your goals on a sheet of paper. Get it laminated and stick it up on the wall in your shower. This way every morning when you are showering you can also read your goals.
Establish for yourself the successful habit of personally development. The more developed you become as a person, the more you can and will achieve and the more you can help others to do the same.
